Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is the adventure of a lifetime, and how well you pack can decide whether the trek feels enjoyable or punishing. Temperatures swing from hot at the base to below freezing at the summit, so you'll need suitable gear for every climate zone.

Thermal tops and leggings, in synthetic fabric or merino wool
Trekking shirts with long sleeves
A fleece jacket or a lightweight down jacket
Insulated pants for summit night
A waterproof jacket with a hood
Waterproof pants
Convertible hiking pants
Light t-shirts
A warm hat and gloves, plus an extra pair of liner gloves
A sun hat or cap
A buff or neck gaiter
Waterproof hiking boots that are well broken in
Camp shoes or sandals for the evenings
Warm trekking socks, with merino wool recommended – at least 4–5 pairs
Gaiters to keep out dust and snow
A 4-season sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C / 14°F
A sleeping bag liner for added warmth and hygiene
An inflatable pillow (optional, but handy)
Collapsible trekking poles
A headlamp with spare batteries, which is essential for summit night
Sunglasses with UV protection
A 25–30L daypack with a rain cover
An 80–100L duffle bag for the porters to carry your gear (waterproof is recommended)
A 3L hydration bladder or water bottles
Water purification tablets or a filter
Energy snacks such as nuts, protein bars, and dried fruits
A personal first aid kit with plasters, blister pads, and pain relievers
Prescription medication, if you need it
Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and lip balm with SPF
Wet wipes and hand sanitizer
Toilet paper, kept in a ziplock bag
A quick-dry travel towel
Passport and visa, if applicable
Cash in USD for tips and souvenirs
Travel insurance paperwork (the policy must cover high-altitude trekking)
Pack light but wisely – the porters carry your duffle bag, but your daypack needs to be comfortable.
Try out your gear before the climb – break in your boots and adjust your packs ahead of time.
Layering is essential – Kilimanjaro's climate zones run from rainforest to arctic, so expect temperatures to change quickly.
Don't forget your summit night gear – that is the coldest stretch of the whole trek.
