Elephant Watching in Tanzania: Where to Go

Where to Go

When elephants top your safari wish list, Tarangire National Park is the clearest answer. It has some of the biggest elephant herds in all of Tanzania, especially in the dry season, when the Tarangire River is one of the only dependable water sources for miles around and pulls huge numbers of elephants to its banks. Ruaha National Park also holds sizable elephant populations, and far fewer vehicles gather at each sighting than in the busier Northern Circuit parks. That's a trade worth weighing if a crowd-free experience matters to you as much as the sighting does. The same dry-season logic applies in both parks. As water gets scarcer, elephants gather more predictably near rivers and waterholes, which noticeably improves your chances of seeing a big herd instead of a scattered few.
