Gombe Stream National Park: Visitor Guide
Gombe Stream National Park: Visitor Guide
A Complete Visitor Guide
Tanzania's smallest national park, Gombe Stream, carries importance well beyond its size. Jane Goodall began her long-running chimpanzee research here, and the work is still active today. It fundamentally changed how the world understands our closest living relatives.
Gombe, like Mahale farther south, can be reached only by boat along Lake Tanganyika. That naturally limits visitor numbers and keeps the experience intimate. Trekking takes you through the same forest where decades of behavioral research have unfolded, and the habituated chimpanzee communities make sightings more reliable than at many other primate destinations.
With its remote, boat-only access, Gombe is most efficiently paired with Mahale in a dedicated western Tanzania primate itinerary instead of being treated as a lone standalone stop.
