Choosing the Right Time to Climb Kilimanjaro
Because Tanzania and Kilimanjaro sit so close to the equator, they don't see the usual swings between winter and summer. The country instead alternates between wet and dry seasons. Rain, mud, ice and snow all put extra strain on the body, so the warmer, drier months are the best bet for your climb.
Exactly when to go depends largely on your preferences and on what you want in terms of weather and crowds. In general there are two main climbing seasons:
Dry Season (June to October): This is regarded as the best time to climb Kilimanjaro. The weather is drier and cooler, with clear skies, the trails are less muddy, and your odds of clear views from the summit improve. These months are also less crowded than the wet season.
Wet Season (November to May): This stretch includes the "short rains" of November to December and the "long rains" of March to May. Heavy rain, mud and cloud can make a wet-season climb difficult. On the other hand, the mountain is quieter then, and you can enjoy lush scenery and wildflowers.
If avoiding crowds matters more to you than the chance of wet, muddy conditions, a wet-season climb is worth considering. Just be ready for the challenges that come with it.
In the end, the right time for you comes down to your own preferences and how well you handle different weather. Do thorough research, plan well ahead, and weigh what matters to you when choosing your dates. It's also wise to consult a reputable tour operator who can give you current information and advice for your particular trip.
Climbing Kilimanjaro at full moon
Many climbers time their summit push for the full moon. The brighter nights make it easier to see, and a moon hanging overhead makes for a beautiful moment as you stand on top of The Roof of Africa.
