Visiting Tanzania in April: Climate, Animals and Visitor Numbers

What a April safari in Tanzania is really like

April is typically the wettest month in northern Tanzania, and we'd rather say so plainly than gloss over it. A few camps on the southern plains shut temporarily at this time, and the rain tends to be heavier and more sustained than the shorter showers of March. What April costs you in convenience, it repays in price. It's reliably the cheapest month of the year at most Northern Circuit lodges, a real option for travelers who care more about value than guaranteed dry-season conditions. It's also an excellent month for birders, since migratory species are plentiful, and a birding-focused itinerary can put to good use a month that a classic big-game safari might skip. If your dates are flexible and keeping costs down is the main goal, April deserves a serious look. Just go in with realistic expectations about the rain and some camp closures. Get in touch and we'll give you an honest view on whether April suits what you hope to see, or browse our safari itineraries for other timing options.
