Layering is the key principle for Kilimanjaro — you'll experience everything from warm rainforest heat to well-below-freezing summit conditions on the same climb (see our climate zones guide for why).
Base and mid layers: Moisture-wicking base layers, plus fleece or down mid-layers for the colder zones higher up.
Outer layers: A genuinely waterproof, windproof jacket and pants — not just water-resistant.
Extremities: A warm hat, a sun hat, liner and insulated gloves, gaiters, and thick wool or synthetic hiking socks.
Footwear: Broken-in, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support — this is not the trip to try out brand-new boots.
Sleep system: A four-season sleeping bag rated well below freezing, plus a sleeping bag liner for extra warmth.
Other essentials: A headlamp with spare batteries (essential for summit night), trekking poles, UV-protective sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a personal first-aid kit.
