The map makes Rwanda and Tanzania look far apart, but combining gorilla trekking with a safari works better than you'd expect. A brief regional flight connects Kigali and Kilimanjaro, so you don't lose a whole extra day getting between the two.
Plan the gorilla permit early; it's the single item that can't wait. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda issues a limited number each day, and you should reserve yours months in advance. Don't leave this part of the trip open or decide it shortly before you travel.
Many travelers follow a well-tested pattern of 3 days trekking gorillas, then a 6 to 7 day Tanzania safari. You get two quite different wildlife experiences in one trip, first tracking primates through dense forest and then watching big game across open plains.
