Overview
Leaving from Dar es Salaam, this 3-day itinerary heads to Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park) and includes a boat ride on the Rufiji River, where crocodiles, hippos and many other animals gather at the water's edge.
Nyerere ranks among the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa. Its boat safaris give you a different vantage point from the vehicle-based game drives that most Tanzania safaris depend on. We can also arrange flying safaris from Zanzibar, as well as road packages that depart from Arusha in northern Tanzania.

Day by Day (3 days)
Set out from Dar es Salaam early in the morning for Selous Game Reserve, a fairly long drive that gets you there by mid-day. Lunch is followed by a boat ride on the Rufiji River, where crocodiles and hippos gather to drink and, with luck, hunt. You spend the night at Selous Mapumziko Lodge, which sits on the riverbank.
Today brings a full day of game drives through Selous, searching for elephant, zebra, gazelle, impala and the rare African wild dog. The reserve takes its name from explorer Frederick Selous, holds UNESCO World Heritage status, and spans roughly the area of Switzerland. Its terrain varies from savannah grassland to rocky outcrops, with the Rufiji River cutting through. You can choose boat trips, walking safaris or 4x4 game drives. Overnight at Selous Mapumziko Lodge. All meals included.
Begin with a game drive or nature walk in the early morning, followed by breakfast and the drive back to Dar es Salaam, which you reach in the afternoon. Anyone flying on to Zanzibar is instead taken to the airstrip for the flight. Camping at public campsites just outside the reserve is another way to arrange this safari, as is flying in directly from Zanzibar or Arusha.
