Overview
Our 3-day Mount Meru itinerary suits anyone after a shorter mountain challenge. It reaches the summit faster than the standard 4-day version, which works for reasonably fit climbers short on time, though the compressed schedule does leave less time to acclimatize along the way.
The route first climbs through the forest zone of Arusha National Park, where wildlife sightings are common on the lower slopes, then moves into higher moorland and volcanic terrain on the approach to Socialist Peak at 4,566m. Summit night starts in the early hours so you reach the top by sunrise.
Take it as a standalone 3-day mountain trip, or as a quick acclimatization climb before a longer Kilimanjaro expedition.

Day by Day (3 days)
Duration: approx. 5 – 7 hours of hiking
Vegetation Type: Forest
The tour begins after breakfast at your lodge (1400 m), from where you drive about 30 minutes via Usa river town to Ngongongare gate. Your guide handles all the paperwork at the gate, and then you drive through Arusha National Park, with a few stops to look for wildlife, to Momella gate for a final check of the porters and luggage.
After that, the 3 days of Mt Meru trekking begin at a slow, polepole pace. The first day is much like a walking safari, and along the way you may see animals such as reticulated Giraffes, Zebras, Waterbuck and Buffaloes. As the hike is inside the park, an armed TANAPA ranger accompanies you all the way to camp.
Duration: 4 – 5 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Forest Zone.
Following breakfast, begin your 3 days Mt Meru trekking on the steep path through the forest zone, where you will see various birds and animals en route. Along the way you will view Mount Meru Crater & the Ash Tray. You reach Saddle Hut, located in the alpine desert zone, in time for a hot lunch (but this will depend on your pace).
Following lunch and some rest, you can choose an acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m). It is a good hike with some great view of great Meru & the area around & it prepares you for a night attempt on the summit of the main Meru Mountain. Dinner is served early on this day so that you get enough rest before your midnight summit attempt. Try to be asleep as early as possible, around 19:00 hrs.
Duration Approx. 9-12 hours of hiking.
Vegetation Type: Alpine desert.
The wake-up call comes at 00:30 after midnight, with tea and biscuit, and the final push to the summit begins at 01:30 hrs. The last day of your 3 days Mt Meru trekking starts with trading on the steep grade path to Rhino point at (3800 m), followed by Cobra point at (4,350 m).
Beyond that, the route runs along a rocky ridge, squeezed between the Crater and the inner cliffs of Meru Mountain. The summit (4,566 m) is reached as the first rays of sun appear from the East. On clear days, morning can be the best time to view his Majesty Kilimanjaro Mountain, and the crater cliffs plunge steeply, by almost 1000 feet or more.
You linger at the summit for pictures, then go back down to Saddle Hut for some rest & afterward continue to Miriakamba Hut & to Mommella gate for check out.
